A Glimpse into the History of Scranton
- Coal Mining Heritage: A number of trolley cars were first put to use in the city of Scranton, which earned itself the nickname of ‘Electric City’. Scranton history relates directly with the coal mining industry, which was one of the main sources of income of the 19th and early 20th century.
- Founding: It was founded in the year 1866 by three brothers; George, Selden and Elias who were in search of a courser for their coal mining and industrialization.
- Railroad Hub: Scranton witnessed the birth of the Lackawanna Railroad in the 1850’s which provided transport for coal and other goods and boosted the economic activities in the city.
- Historic Landmarks: Constructed in the 1840s, the Scranton Iron Furnaces are the remains of the possessions of the city’s iron and steel industry, chronicling the industrial age of Sorton.
