Welcome to Carmel, Indiana

A Glimpse into the History of Carmel

Established in 1837, Carmel was a small agrarian settlement then known as Bethlehem.

In 1874 the present name of Carmel was bestowed, after the Carmel Presbyterian Church placed about it.

Carmel was officially incorporated as a town in 1874 and was made a city in 1974.

The Monon Railroad, which was crucial for the city during the late nineteenth and twenty-first century, was redeveloped into the Monon Trail, which is a popular recreational pathway.

During the late 20th century and the early parts of twenty first century, the socio – economic growth of the city was due to the occupation of Indianapolis and the comfort of raising families in such a rapidly growing town.
